Sports Day 2016

Brilliant Barrington! In this instance the alliteration is wholly appropriate.
While the scores were close for 2nd and 3d places, there was absolutely no doubt as to the winners of Sports Day 2016. Even the weather got “on-side” as early showers cleared to leave us all dry for the afternoon albeit cold from the strong westerly wind.
1st place: Barrington
2nd place Montacute
3d place: Tyntesfield
The weather induced delays did however cause the organisers to reluctantly drop the relay races from the programme so that the event could finish on time.
We could not however drop “the big two”. The “big two” seem to be the most eagerly anticipated races in recent years namely the “mum’s race” and the male staff race.
Mrs. Stitch did “the double” by once again winning easily in the mum’s race. Will anyone be able to stop her getting the treble next year? We will have to wait and see.
The male staff race was meant to be a face off between two time champion Mr. Burgess and two time silver medalist Mr. Ashcroft. Mr. Ashcroft had sworn revenge after last year’s race and has been training all year for this very event, he has even lost an undisclosed amount of weight in order to overcome his nemesis.
There was however an unexpected twist to this year’s edition when under the radar came the quiet and modest figure of new member of staff Mr. Hollis.
Mr. Hollis made a lightning quick start and had a healthy lead until he made the mistake of looking to his left to see where his rivals were. This was a mistake because our track – particularly the lane Mr. Hollis was in – is not the smoothest track in the world. He tripped and fell just a few metres short of the finish and Mr. Ashcroft claimed his maiden victory!
Already though, thoughts have turned to next years race, can Mr. Hollis stay on his feet and defeat his two more experienced rivals? Can Mr. Ashcroft do the double? Can Mr. Burgess make a better start and get back to winning ways? There’s only one way to find out – come to sports day 2017!
