What a great trip! Everyone managed to get on the track and no one fell off!
Ten pupils plus Mr. Ashworth had never been on a track bike before so this was quite an achievement. There are a number of things which need to be borne in mind:
- A track bike has no gears….or brakes!!!
- A track bike has a “fixed wheel” – what this means is that the pedals are “fixed” to the back wheel. If you pedal forwards the bike moves forwards. If you pedal backwards, the bike moves backwards. You cannot “freewheel”, if you stop pedaling while you are moving – the bike will “buck” and you may fall off!
- You are strapped in! You cannot take your feet off the pedals!
Coach Steve did an excellent job of gently upskilling the group and by the end most were able to ride up on the steepest parts of the banking and do “flying laps”. What a great way to spend a day. Everyone voted that they would like to go back.
Finally, our most grateful thanks to Marc Malloy who once again gave up his time for the school free of charge – what a star!
