What a fantastic day for Westhaven School, our friends from Weston Golf Club and of course the irrepressible Andy Towens.
As mentioned before we had 24 teams participating in the tournament including a “Friends of Westhaven” and a staff team. There were many reports from the golfers about what a great day it was but the best stories were about how much the golfers appreciated the fantastically behaved spectators by the 14th green who were (of course) the pupils from Westhaven School.
It was a blustery day which made the round a challenge for everyone but the initial forecasts for heavy rain proved overly pessimistic and no one was even remotely close to being soaked at the end of their round so that was a source of welcome relief for all the organisers.
Each team started off at the first tee with a greeting from the deputy headteacher Jamie Peacock and with a team photograph which they were able to purchase (professionally printed and mounted) at the end of their round. Our thanks to Endre Gal for his tireless work before during and after the event with the photography.
There were two mini challenges on the round of “closest to the pin” and “longest drive” and the prizes for these challenges were all kindly donated by Mr Towans.
Mr Towans and Westhaven Golf Club along with the school also helped with prizes for the raffle and the putting competition. Strangely enough Darren Burgess (a Westhaven teacher) and Joe Turner (the Westhaven schoolkeeper) won the “pin” and putting competitions! Mr Turner turning around a torrid day with a 33 footer to take the prize.
We even had MP John Penrose come along to support the event.
After their rounds the players retired to the clubhouse for refreshments provided by the golf club and to await the results which were as follows:
Mens Winners: Banbury Bandits – D. Doley, R. Doley, C. Doley, I. Bissell
Ladies winners: “Burnham Ladies” – S. Burnell, S. Cox-Conklin, S. Wall, S. Bordier
Putting prize: Joe Turner – Westhaven School
Nearest pin: Penny Howson, Mark Waite, Darren Burgess, Michael Day
Longest drive: (Mens) Stu Wills, (Ladies) Shane Bordier.
Our thanks once again to all staff and pupils from Westhaven School, staff and members of Weston Golf Club, all the participants, Bristol Audi and of course Mr Andy Towens.
Banbury Bandits – Mens winners
Burnham Ladies – Ladies winners
The team from Westhaven – 3d place plus putting prize and one “pin” prize – well done boys!
Mr John Penrose MP with Mr Andy Towens at the event.
Guess who won the secret auction for a free round of golf? You guessed it! A member of the Westhaven team – our own Mr Peacock! Enjoy your round sir – please can I go too?
Now the £64million question – how much was raised? (Cue drum roll…) £3633.00 whoah!
Our grateful thanks also go to AA Flooring. They wanted to play in our tournament but then had to withdraw their team but still sent us a cheque for £100 for our Sports Hall Fund – thank you ever so much!
